The Bell Tower

You might think what are the chimes are coming from the church on the hill, well here’s the answer.

The Hathersage St. Michael’s  All Angels Church is legendary for holding Little John’s grave and is the example setting for the book, Jane Eyre.

The bells in the church have been in there from 1520, it also holds a tiny medieval Sanctus bell, a group of bells run at important Christian times during christenings weddings or blessings people.

Legend said that Little John shot a large arrow from the top of the bell tower that was to land where his cottage was. The church was built on the hill for two reasons; number one was to protect the building from the boggy ground and number two was to make the bells heard throughout the valley.

There’s an opportunity in the first full week of June to try ringing the bells in Hathersage St. Michael’s All Angels church, so if you want to give a try it’s on Wednesday, 7:30PM – 9:00 PM.
