To get into the church you will go through the south porch and, although it was built after the main church, it is still seeped in history and knowledge. It may seem boring to some, but once you have read this, well you never know…
Swallows
If you look up in to the ceiling in the porch, there might be some swallow nests and if you are lucky, you might see the birds living in the nests. They’re pretty cool and also remind you that churches can also be a home for nature. We managed to count two nests. How many can you find?
The Headstone
On one side of the entrance, you should see a large gravestone. It is believed to be the original headstone of Little Johns grave [available to view] and, if you look closely you may be able to see some very faint markings. We managed to find what we think is a faint cross and an L. I wonder if you can see more…
Old Security Pole
To the left of the notice board there is an old security pole, used to hold the gates closed at night and keep raiders out. You might not be able to see, but the end of the pole has a hook on that would have slotted into the original gates and done its job. Because you can only lock and unlock the gates from the inside there must be another door, but this door has been specially made so that only one person can fit through it at a time. This means it would be easier to hold off raiders. We couldn’t find it but I wonder if you could?
