The Font!

When you enter the church doors, the first thing you will spot is a lead-lined stone bowl called a Font. This Font has been around since the 13th century, which is around 700 to 800 years ago! Read on for more information about the font and its history .

How was the font made?

The Font was made of intricate hand-carved stone panels featuring the splendid features of the coat-of-arms of local families like the Eyres, Bernakes and Padleys. The inside and the edge of the font is made up of lead. Because lead is a soft metal it made it easier to mould to the bowl.

The Lid

There is a lid font to protect the holy water and debris. On the top of the lid there is a  hoop which was originally lifted up by a rope, unfortunately, they do not do this anymore due to the weight of the lid. There are shields carved into the lid just like the shields on the side of the font.

Challenge: How many x’s can you spot on the font?
